Chester and Sophie had been friends for a very long time. Chester loved Sophie from the minute he saw her.
He had just gotten off the bus at 22nd and Main and Sophie was speeding down the sidewalk, to her final exam, as fast as her little legs would carry her. Sophie had been studying for what seemed like an eternity so that she could be the first in her Meerkat family to graduate from college. Chester on the other hand had known his entire life, he would be taking over his family’s business of sweater making.
On that fateful day in May, Sophie, late to class, came racing around the corner, catching her sweater on the sharp edge of the fence running in front of the Main Street Muffler Shop. Just as her sweater snagged, the mean, growling guard dog of the muffler shop heard the ting ting of the fence wire, hitting against the steel poles and … THAT WAS IT ….. He came running, fangs bared, tongue hanging, barking his ferocious bark. Sophie, so startled by his fast, furious, frenzied, gnarling approach; took off like a light, not realizing that a piece of her sweater was caught on the wire.
It was the most fantastic sight as she appeared to be completely unravelling before everyone’s eye. As the guard dog lurched for his prey, drool flying, grasping his two paws against the chain-link …. what once was a sweater laid the entire length of the city block, as a single strand of yarn, and Sophie was sweaterless.
Chester shocked by the unraveling and seeing the stunned and embarrassed look on Sophie’s face, reached down, scooped her up to cover her bare, wooly, meerkat body and said with a toothy smile. “Hi, I am Chethter and I thee you’ve lothst your thweater. My family ownths the Thnaggle Tooth Thweater Company. I think we should be frienths”
